Thirty-nine coats over hemp set in rice paste, four days a coat in the cedar cabinet, each cut back with magnolia charcoal; tin at the eleventh and thirty-first coats gives two tide bands at different depths, and the lacquer was left thicker at the right end, where the shallower band dissolves. Where a coat has been polished thin the black reads amber. The panel is convex across its length, the edges wrapped in hemp and blacked, bengara red visible as a line at the lower right corner.
